How/Why: Deputies have arrested two men after they burglarized an ATM machine in Madeira Beach. The incident occurred at about 7:04 a.m. on September 15, 2009 at an ATM machine located at 12928 Village Boulevard in Madeira Beach.
Deputies were dispatched to 13000 Gulf Boulevard after a witness on the 5th floor of that building reported seeing two men using crow bars in an attempt to break into the ATM machine.
Upon arrival deputies observed the two males at the ATM machine. One of them had a crow bar in his hands. When the suspects saw the deputy, they fled on foot and the deputy pursued.
According to deputies, one of the suspects, later identified as 25-year-old Justin M. Bass ran into a courtyard with a dead end and subsequently had to return back toward the street. The deputy then encountered Bass at which time he ordered him to the ground. The suspect initially complied, but then got up off the ground and began running again. The deputy deployed his electronic control weapon, but the suspect continued to run. The deputy pursued again and a second deputy was eventually able to subdue the suspect.
The second suspect identified as 24-year-old Michael G. Llauget, was subsequently arrested just outside Bass' apartment in Madeira Beach where he was found walking his dog.
Deputies did observe heavy damage to the ATM machine. It appeared however, that no money had been taken. The crowbar was found near the ATM and Bass was found to be in possession of a pair of pliers which were apparently taken from within the machine.
Both bass and Llauget were arrested for commercial burglary, resisting/obstructing a law enforcement officer without violence, criminal mischief, and possession of burglary tools.
They were transported to the Pinellas County Jail without further incident.
