The Pinellas County Sheriff's Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating this incident.
What: Just before 3:30 this afternoon, Marcus Gray was riding his bicycle southbound on Gulf Boulevard, when for an unknown reason he crashed into the back of a U.S. Mail delivery truck, which was stopped with lights flashing on the side of the road, as the driver was delivering mail at a residence.
Where: The collision occurred in front of a residence located at 1720 Gulf Blvd., Belleair Shore.
When: The crash occurred just before 3:30 p.m., Thursday, September 10, 2009.
How/Why: Marcus Gray was wearing a helmet when witnesses say he road his bicycle into the rear of a U.S. Postal Service truck as it was routinely parked, with lights flashing, on the side of the road in order to facilitate the delivery of mail.
Mr. Gray was taken by medical helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center, and reportedly is in critical condition with potentially life threatening injuries to his neck and head.
The Sheriff's Major Accident Investigation Team responded to the scene.
The mail truck driver was not injured.
