Mize has been an employee at Pinellas County Solid Waste for just about four months.
What: A Pinellas County Solid Waste employee suffered serious head injuries in a welding accident this afternoon at the plant.
He was taken by ambulance to Bayfront Medical Center with very serious head injuries.
Where: The accident occurred in the ash distribution area of the Pinellas County Solid Waste Plant, located at 3001 110th Avenue.
When: The accident occurred just before 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 8, 2009.
How/Why: According to responding deputies, Mr. Mize was doing some spot-welding on a metal plate in the ash distribution area of the plant. Just as he was finishing the spot welding, for an unknown reason, the plate suddenly separated from the surface where he was trying to attach it. The metal plate struck him in the head and face, causing very serious injuries.
Mr. Mize was taken by ambulance to Bayfront Medical Center where his injuries are being monitored.
Deputies say Mr. Mize has been employed at the County Solid Waste location for nearly four months.
The investigation continues.
