Deputies have arrested a St. Petersburg woman for carrying a concealed firearm, after she left her purse with a gun inside of it in the courtyard of the Clearwater Criminal Courts Complex.

According to deputies, 52-year-old Mary Jane Stubblefield arrived at the Criminal Courts Complex. As she was going into the building, prior to going through security, she realized she had her gun inside her purse. She exited the building and placed her purse on a raised platform in the northeast corner of the courtyard in plain view, just outside of the main exit.

Deputies assigned to Court Security were alerted that the purse had been left outside. Deputies brought it in, ran it through the security scanner and determined that there was a gun inside. The gun is described as a Smith and Wesson 44-caliber Magnum. Deputies say the gun was loaded.

Stubblefield, who had already made her way through security and was in the lobby was subsequently arrested for carrying a concealed weapon. She did not have a permit.

Upon arrest, the suspect admitted that the gun was hers and that she had forgotten that it was in her purse.
