Victims:
Five children between the ages of 5 and 13, three boys and 2 girls. The children are known to the suspects and were in their care at the time of the incident. No further information that would tend to identify the children will be released per statute 39.202.
What: Deputies have arrested a Largo couple for child neglect after the home they were in with five children, was found to be in deplorable conditions.
Where: Deputies responded to a private residence in Largo. The exact address of the occurred will not be released as it would tend to identify the children.
When: The couple was arrested at about 12:38 a.m. on Monday, September 7, 2009.
How/Why: Deputies have arrested a Largo couple for child neglect after the home they were in with five children, was found to be in deplorable conditions. Deputies responded to a complaint reference the welfare of the children.
When deputies arrived on scene they discovered the lawn was overgrown, clutter was in the front yard and a dryer was sitting on the sidewalk near the front door. Deputies say the windows in the front of the home were open, the screens were ripped out and sheets were hanging from the inside to block the view to the inside of the residence. Deputies noticed several roaches crawling on the house, in the window frames and on the sheets. Deputies described a foul odor coming from within the home.
The suspect, 34-year-old Lisa Marie Schohl and the five children who were in her care, were home when deputies arrived. When deputies gained access into the home, they further discovered a five foot high pile of filled garbage bags in the kitchen, dirty dishes piled on the counters, dirty clothing on the floors and insects throughout the residence.
The suspect, 49-year-old Steven Thomas Schohl, returned to the home a short time later. Both he and his wife were arrested for five counts of child neglect and transported to the Pinellas County Jail.
The investigation continues.
