How/Why: The Sheriff's Office Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) is investigating a motorcycle vs Sheriff's cruiser crash. The crash occurred at about 1:18 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at 70th Avenue, just west of 34th Street in Pinellas Park.
According to investigators, the cruiser driven by on-duty Deputy Rodney Robinson, was headed eastbound on 70th Avenue. Just east of 34th Street, the deputy attempted to make a left hand turn into the parking lot of Parkside Mall when he was struck by a motorcycle that was traveling in the left lane in a westbound direction on 70th Avenue.
Deputies say the motorcycle and its rider, identified as 69-year-old Roger Amado, slid across the pavement and struck the front bumper of another vehicle, a 1998 Infinity, that was stopped facing south exiting the mall parking lot.
Amado came to rest directly in front of the Infinity, driven by 20-year-old Kelly Zarate.
Amado was transported by ambulance to Bayfront Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.
No other injuries were reported.
