School Crossing Guards Attend Training In Preparation For The 2009-2010 School Year

What:  About 170 school crossing guards will be trained over the next three days in preparation for the 2009-2010 school year. On Thursday and Friday returning crossing guards will receive a  four-hour block of 'refresher' training. On Saturday new crossing guards will receive an eight-hour block of instruction.

Where:  The training sessions for North County and South County returning crossing guards; and new crossing guards will be held at the Pinellas County Administrative Services Building (ASB) located at 14500 49th Street in Clearwater.

When:  The training session for North County crossing guards will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2009

The training session for returning South County crossing guards will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2009.

Training for new crossing guards will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2009.

How/Why:  

About 170 school crossing guards will be trained over the next three days in preparation for the 2009-2010 school year.

On Thursday and Friday returning crossing guards will receive a four-hour block of 'refresher' training. On Saturday new crossing guards will receive an eight-hour block of instruction.

The four-hour training blocks on Thursday and Friday will be held in a classroom setting.

School Crossing Guard Supervisor, Sharon Lough, adds that the training on Saturday for the new crossing guards will not only have the in-classroom component, but will also require the guards to practice and demonstrate the duties they will be performing on the job once the school year begins. 

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office adheres to the training standards of the Florida Department of Transportation.

Of the 170 crossing guards, 16 are new hires.

The Sheriff's Office Crossing Guard Program covers 34 elementary schools, 11 middle schools and 1 high school within unincorporated areas of the county, as well as in several contract cities.
