Man Extricated From Vehicle After Crashing Into Concrete Pole

What: Sheriff's deputies responded to a single vehicle crash earlier this morning where a 2002 Saturn van crashed into a concrete pole. Dunedin Fire Rescue responders used heavy extrication equipment to remove the male driver from the wreckage. He was flown by medical helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center where he is recovering from non life-threatening injuries.
Where: The crash occurred at a location in front of 1260 Main Street, Dunedin.
The crash was called in from a location across the street, identified as 1143 Main Street.
When: The crash occured just before 9:00 a.m., Monday, August 10, 2009.
How/Why: Investigating deputies advise witnesses said they observed the van traveling westbound on Main Street prior to the crash. Witnesses say the van appeared to veer left then right in the lane before crashing into the pole.
Deputies are still working to ascertain the cause of the crash.
The vehicle is a total loss as responding Dunedin Fire Rescue crews had to cut the roof off the vehicle with heavy extrication equipment in order to remove the driver, Richard Szczerbacki.
Deputies say Mr. Szczerbacki was conscious and alert as he was flown to Bayfront.
The investigation continues.
