What:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) are investigating a crash involving a Sheriff’s Office transport van.

When:
The crash occurred at approximately 12:28 a.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2018.

Where:
The crash occurred at the intersection of Ulmerton Road and US 19 in Unincorporated Largo.  

Why/How:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) are investigating a crash involving a Sheriff’s Office transport van.

According to investigators, at approximately 12:28 a.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2018, G4S Driver Officer Michael Hanson was stopped in a Sheriff’s Office transport van at a red light in the westbound lane at the intersection of Ulmerton Road and US 19 in Unincorporated Largo. While waiting for the light to change Officer Hanson was struck from behind by another vehicle operated by 57-year-old Mark D. Foster of 2045 East Bay Drive Apartment #312, Largo. Foster was operating his 2016 Toyota Corolla westbound in the median lane of Ulmerton Road. Foster failed to see Officer Hanson stopped for a red light and rear ended the transport van.
 

Officer Hanson was transported to Northside Hospital with minor injuries.

There were no prisoners in the transport van at the time of the crash.

Foster showed numerous indicators of impairment and was arrested for driving under the influence with injury/property damage. He was transported to the Pinellas County Jail without incident.

 Foster had Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC), of .143/.154.

The investigation continues.
