What:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) investigate vehicle crash after man flees from a traffic stop in unincorporated St. Petersburg.

When:
The crash occurred at about 1:54 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14, 2017.

Where:
The crash occurred at the intersection of 7^th Avenue North and 32^nd Street North, in St. Petersburg.

How/Why:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) investigate vehicle crash that caused serious injuries to a passenger in St. Petersburg.

According to investigators, at about 1:54 a.m. on June 14, 2017, deputies assigned to the Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF) attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2013 Nissan Altima at the intersection of 38^th Avenue North and 66^th Street North. The vehicle fled eastbound on 38^th Avenue North at a high rate of speed and the traffic stop was terminated.

VCTF members did not pursue the vehicle but had intermittent visual contact of the vehicle from a distance as it turned southbound onto 28^th Street North. VCTF lost visual contact of the vehicle as it reached 22^nd Avenue North at which point they began to circulate the area. An undercover VCTF deputy driving an unmarked car regained brief visual contact with the vehicle as it turned westbound onto 7^th Avenue North from 28^th Street North, and shortly thereafter the vehicle crashed into the driver’s side of a 2011 Honda Civic at the intersection of 32nd Street North. At no time were deputies pursuing the vehicle.

The Nissan Altima was being driven by 37-year-old Richard Odoms, with his passenger 22 –year-old Daysha Ellis-Davis.

The Honda Civic was driven by 24-year-old Shaheed Wright, with his passenger identified as 25-year-old Dontay Anderson, who was not wearing a seatbelt.  

Following the crash, Odoms continued driving into the eastbound lanes of 7^th Avenue North, where he struck two parked vehicles before being taken into custody without incident.

Paramedics responded and transported the victims to Bayfront Hospital where Wright was treated and released and Anderson is being treated for serious injuries.

Odoms was transported to Northside Hospital where he was treated and released into custody.

Investigators say alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Odoms was charged with Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding, DWLSR, and Reckless Driving all resulting in serious bodily injury, Possession of Hydromorphone, and Possession of MDMA.

The investigation continues.
