What:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team are investigating a fatal hit and run crash in Gulfport. Investigators seek the public’s help in identifying the driver of the hit and run vehicle.

When:
The incident occurred at about 10:20 p.m., on Wednesday, December 21, 2016.

Where:
The incident occurred at the intersection of 49^th Street South and 11^th Avenue South, in Gulfport.

Why/How:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team are investigating a fatal hit and run crash that occurred in Gulfport, at approximately 10:20 p.m., on Wednesday, December 21, 2016.

According to investigators, 41-year-old Frankie McCray, was walking eastbound crossing 49^th Street South at the intersection of 11^th Avenue South, in a marked crosswalk, when an unidentified vehicle traveling southbound on 49^th Street South struck McCray in the roadway.

The driver of the unidentified vehicle continued southbound and never stopped to render aid to the victim.  

Investigators say that the driver of a 2012 Dodge Avenger, 24-year-old Martin Thomas, was traveling southbound on 49^th Street South, approaching the 11^th Avenue South intersection, when he was unable to stop before striking McCray who was lying in the roadway. Thomas stopped his vehicle at the scene.

McCray was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators described the suspect vehicle as being black in color, possibly a truck.

Investigators do not suspect that Thomas was impaired at the time of the crash.

Next of kin has been notified.
