Why/How:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) have arrested a suspect who they say fled from a Pinellas deputy and crashed into two vehicles in Dunedin on November 6, 2015.

According to investigators, the suspect 22-year-old  Kirk Mayberry, was driving a 2000 Ford Crown Victoria, eastbound on Causeway Boulevard at a high rate of speed. A Pinellas deputy attempted to stop the vehicle for speeding and Mayberry fled in the Crown Victoria on Causeway Boulevard.

The deputy did not pursue the vehicle; however, Mayberry continued driving at a high rate of speed eastbound and struck a 2005 Nissan Murano that was traveling southbound on Alternate 19. Mayberry’s vehicle struck a second vehicle, a 2014 Freightliner, Jolly Trolley, at the same intersection.  Mayberry left the scene of both crashes and continued driving southbound on Alternate 19 to Palm Blvd where he abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

Responding deputies located two of Mayberry’s passengers who were nearby. Both passengers were arrested after they lied, claiming that they had been carjacked prior to the crash.

K-9 deputies searched the area but they were unable to locate Mayberry.

Through various investigative techniques, investigators developed probable cause for Mayberry’s arrest and they arrested him at a construction site in Clearwater.

Mayberry was charged with 2 counts of leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, leaving the scene of a crash with injury, fleeing and eluding and felon in possession of a firearm.

Mayberry was transported to the Pinellas County Jail without incident.

The investigation continues.
