When:

Where:
The crash occurred on the Belleair Causeway in Belleair Beach.

Why/How:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) are investigating a deputy involved crash in Belleair Beach.

According to investigators, at approximately 6:55 a.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2015, Corporal Kannika Nimithkoune was traveling eastbound on the Belleair Causeway when she observed a Chevy Tahoe traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of the causeway.

As Corporal Nimithkoune made attempts to avoid a head on collision, the driver of the Tahoe struck the back drivers side of Corporal Nimithkoune’s marked Crown Victoria.

The Tahoe then struck the concrete barrier and traveled northwest where it struck the front drivers side of a Ford van that was traveling eastbound on the causeway. The Ford van then rotated and struck the front of a Dodge truck.

The Chevy Tahoe continued, striking another concrete barrier before coming to a rest in the westbound lane.

The drivers of the Chevy Tahoe, Ford Van and both the driver and passenger of the Dodge truck were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Corporal Nimithkoune was not injured in the crash.

Speed and/or impairment may be factors in the crash.

The investigation continues.
