Why/How:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) are investigating a three-vehicle crash involving a deputy in Pinellas Park.

According to investigators, at approximately 5:52 p.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2015, Deputy Ian Collman was driving a marked Chevy Impala and was stopped in heavy rush hour traffic in the westbound lanes of Gandy Blvd. Also stopped behind him was the driver of a 2014 Chevy Camaro.

The driver of a 2003 Dodge Ram was traveling westbound on Gandy Blvd. approaching the stopped traffic and failed to slow down his vehicle, causing him to crash into the rear of the Camaro.

The impact caused the Camaro to vault forward and crash into the rear of the patrol car.

The driver of the Camaro, identified as 56-year-old Karen Papke was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Deputy Collman was also transported to a local hospital via ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Dodge Ram, identified as 32-year-old Robert Phillips was not injured during the crash.

It does not appear speed nor drug/alcohol impairment were factors in the crash.

The investigation continues.
